If your next home improvement project is replacing your windows, there are specific steps you need to take before ordering new replacement windows. The first course of action in any window replacement or installation project is to measure the windows.
This quick step-by-step guide will help ensure that your new windows are a perfect fit.
Step 1. Measure the Width
Grab your tape measure or slide rule, open your window, and take three measurements of the window’s horizontal plane (width): Top, middle, and bottom. Be sure to measure between the surface of the jambs or the frame, not from the extensions holding the window in place. (Jambs are the main vertical parts forming the sides of a window frame.)
Write down each measurement and account for the width of the tape measure itself. Zen Windows will use the shortest of the three measurements to confirm a proper fit.
Step 2. Measure the Height
Similar to step one, measure the vertical height of the window at the same three points — top, middle, and bottom. Make sure to measure from the tallest point and, again, record the smallest result of these three measurements. A word on measurement discrepancies: One-quarter to one-half inch longer than the actual measurement is the rule of thumb. Never be short.
Step 3: Measure the Depth
To determine the depth of the window, measure between the outside and inside stops that extend in front of the window frame. You should measure this dimension a few times and note the shortest point. This measurement must be at least 3-1/4″.

- When measuring for new or replacement windows, start from the top left corner to the bottom right corner, and write it down. Then, measure the top right corner to the bottom left corner. Compare the measurements for continuity. If these lengths aren’t equal, your window opening is not square or rectangle. Knowing your window frame is misaligned in the rough opening will be helpful before contacting Zen Windows.
